Day 57 – Trek day 3

After packing up my things I headed straight for the hot springs for a pre breakfast dip. Breakfast itself was yummy. I devoured the pancake and honey rolls. This really has been the best I’ve eaten all trip.

Hitting the trail we followed the river down the valley. The fauna changed to more Jungle like and the sun came out in force. The terrain, named Inca flats by José, was up and down but nothing too tricky. Along the way we ran into patches of butterfly. Occasionally a couple would fly alongside as I walked. We also crossed a few tributaries, often via dodgy looking log bridges with waterfalls at their side.

As usual the local insect population saw me as a walking buffet and didn’t stop at seconds. One mosquito bite swelled up to the size of half an egg on my arm. The rest were nasty sand fly bites, to which I seem to react to.

We made good time and made our lunch/camp site in around 31/2 hours. Our campsite was in a small village called Playa and it felt weird being back with people, shops, cars and above all noise.

The name Playa refers to the beach, rocky beach, by the river. I took the opportunity to wash a few sweaty clothes and bath bites in the mountain water.

After happy hour we said goodbye to Fabio before played cards. Around 3 we joined the locals for afternoon sports. We played football and dodge ball with the trek team and a few local children. They really got involved and smiled constantly as we panted from exertion at altitude. One group of girls borrows Katherine’s camera and had quite a time photographing each other and a local dog.

The evening was filled with more food and cards, We taught a few locals how to play Shit Head and in return they taught us some card tricks. Some of the local adults seemed to be on a bender and came back from a local pub crawl totally wasted and making a lot of noise.

Tom and Katherine were discussing the possibility of not walking tomorrow due to injuries sustained whilst walking, nothing serious but enough to create discomfort. Hopefully Tom will we good in the morning as I’ve enjoyed walking and chatting about anything and everything.

About this blog

Welcome to the personal blog of Robert A J Ford, a professional interaction designer and developer based in the UK.

I started this blog in 2007 to record my cycle training leading up to the Etape. I've never been one for diaries but this format works well with my job and lifestyle so I expanded it to record details of other training and events.

As the blog grew it became a space where friends and family followed my activities. Their feedback has inspired me to keep writing. I hope you find something of interest and please feel free to leave comments.
