Day 48 – Thieving scum

Awoke to the light and sound of the city pouring in through our curtain less windows. Managing to get a dribble of hot water out of the shower I freshened up before  we joined last nights group for breakfast. Surprise, surprise it was eggs and cheese again but in the fried format.

We checked out around midday but were allowed to hang around the hostel. Not feeling much like exploring we found a supermarket and stocked up for the long coach journey that loomed.

At 3 we got a cab to the Cruz Del Sur coach station and picked up out tickets without issue. We had an hour or so to kill so we sat in the cafe and I brushed up on my Spanish by translating signs with a dictionary I bought yesterday.

Then the day turned sour. I´d just put my book away as we heard the announcement for the coach. Tom passed me my pack to which I turned and put on. A second later Tom asked me where my small pack was. It had vanished from between my feet. I couldn´t believe it and started looking on and under the chairs; I thought I was loosing my mind. Then I got that sinking feeling that it´d been taken. What´s compounds the situation is that a security guard was no more than 10 meters away the whole time. I ran around the inside and outside but nothing to be seen.

I contacted security but they were pretty useless and insisted we board the coach and report the incident in Cuzco. I´ve lost pretty much all of my luxuries; laptop, camera, phone, ipod, jacket, sun glasses and even the travel munny. Luckily I had my cards and passport on me but I was still left facing a 23hr coach journey with nothing to do, read, eat or drink bar what Tom could muster.

Thankfully I backed up my Galapagos pictures to two cards and placed one in each of my bags. Unfortunately now I´m unlikely to be able to take pictures on the Inca Trail; a highlight of the trip and dream of mine for several years.

Knowing how it felt after being robbed in Majorca I know its not going to be the same. Right now I could get the first flight home.

About this blog

Welcome to the personal blog of Robert A J Ford, a professional interaction designer and developer based in the UK.

I started this blog in 2007 to record my cycle training leading up to the Etape. I've never been one for diaries but this format works well with my job and lifestyle so I expanded it to record details of other training and events.

As the blog grew it became a space where friends and family followed my activities. Their feedback has inspired me to keep writing. I hope you find something of interest and please feel free to leave comments.
