Day 46 – Darwin returns
Long night as Tom was still unwell. With it being a busy day and early start he tried going to the hospital in the early hours but they weren’t open. We hoped to be able to stop off before heading out of town but by the time Jover joined us, we had breakfast and then waited for him to fetch his stuff we didn’t have time. We could have if he’d stuck to the times he’d given us the previous night but I think he’d had a few beers and overslept.
We were in a rush because there was one last stop before we met our early flight out. We all agreed to forgo the visit so Tom could stop off but Jover was insistent and said he should use the one in Quito. So off we went to visit a pair of giant sink holes, formed by enormous bubbles of gas during an eruption. They were quite a sight and I would have like to have spent more than five minutes viewing them, but the rain and Jover moved us on.
We arrived at the airport with plenty of time to spare. Saying goodbye to Mike we wished him well as he is staying on to do some diving. The flight back to Quito was unadventurous, bar the usual tangling of my legs and trolleys; I don’t think they set seats for tall people. Jover, true to form, got off before Quito, probably after chatting up the blonde he met at the airport. Needless to say neither Mike, Tom or I left him a tip.
It felt good to be back at the hostel in Quito; seeing familiar faces and a comfy room it felt a it like home. We went out and treated ourselves to a flavoursome Chinese with plenty of broccoli, it was heaven! I think being back at altitude and in the smog has perked Tom up.
