Day 100 – Tonne up

To celebrate a 100 days on the road we went back to being tourists and did a spot of sightseeing in the Blue Mountains. Using the superb transport setup we jumped from ferry to city train to inter city train and in under three hours we were at Katoomba. I wanted to do some sort of scenic rail journey on our travels and views into the mountains meant this one didn’t disappoint.

Katoomba is the closet town to Echo Point, a spot from where you can view the blue mountains and and geological formation called the Three sisters. Leaving the station we were confronted by numerous tour bus operators charging too much for us. We didn’t want a tour just a ride down to Echo Point so we headed into town in search of a bus.

We wandered so far through town that we popped out the other side. Spotting a tourist information sign we continued out of town. We walked for 20 minutes and ended up finding the tourist information at Echo Point. we had to laugh for we’d just enjoyed a nice stroll for nothing at others pilled out of coaches costing more than our entire journey to get from Sydney.

We got lucky with the weather and the view was clear for miles. I could make out the blueness that comes from the eucalyptus trees. It reminded me somewhat of the Smokey mountains, but more open. To the left of the viewing platform you can see the Three Sisters, three peaks on a ridge formed from erosion that hold significance for the Aboriginals of the area. We took a walk down some steep steps for a closer look; memories of Wayna Picchu came flooding back.

Heading back to Sydney I passed out on the train; comfy seats. Back in Manly I went for an evening run on the beach and looked on as the locals made riding the waves look effortless.

About this blog

Welcome to the personal blog of Robert A J Ford, a professional interaction designer and developer based in the UK.

I started this blog in 2007 to record my cycle training leading up to the Etape. I've never been one for diaries but this format works well with my job and lifestyle so I expanded it to record details of other training and events.

As the blog grew it became a space where friends and family followed my activities. Their feedback has inspired me to keep writing. I hope you find something of interest and please feel free to leave comments.
