Everest day 11 – Pheriche to Namche

I was treated to a cloudless view of the nearest peak when I opened the curtains. The snow capped peak sat, razor sharp, against a deep blue sky. I was up and about quickly to get a few snaps.

Before setting out on the trail Sandy and I had a Sherpa race. It took some persuading that we really wanted to piggyback them and not the other way round. The course went round the nearest rock pile and exhausted us but made everyone laugh.

The trail back to Tengboche was tougher than expected. Descents that were once blessed downhills turned into nasty climbs. I didn’t want to stop for lunch but looking back I needed the fuel.

To break the monotony of trudging in the tourist train I hung back with Sandy and Gordie to enjoy walking on an empty trail. Whenever we caught the group we found a spot to take in the view and fall behind.

It took longer than I thought to get back to Namche and I felt pretty tired. I definitely recommend poles of the descents, they saved my knees today.

Back at the Khumbu Lodge I could have spent all evening in the hot shower. After a spot of shopping it was time to gorge ourselves on yak sizzlers and chocolate cake.

About this blog

Welcome to the personal blog of Robert A J Ford, a professional interaction designer and developer based in the UK.

I started this blog in 2007 to record my cycle training leading up to the Etape. I've never been one for diaries but this format works well with my job and lifestyle so I expanded it to record details of other training and events.

As the blog grew it became a space where friends and family followed my activities. Their feedback has inspired me to keep writing. I hope you find something of interest and please feel free to leave comments.
