Another week, another pot

This was the weekend of the Warwick regatta; a fun event as you can’t win points and Stratford usually cleans up the pots. Its a mainly local crew affair run on a 500m stretch of narrow river. For all the courses bad points it does have the best starting view; just ahead of the weir that over looks Warwick castle.

Unfortunately my pair had been cancelled, leaving me with only one race for the day. This was no ordinary race though, it was a Stratford vs Stratford in the senior 2 mixed 4. The “A” crew beat Warwick in their heat and met us in the final (we had a bye).

There had been plenty of banter in the lead up to the race but once we were on the water it was serious. Both crews wanted to win, whether they said so or not. Off the start I deployed my usual flapping and air swinging technique. Sandy soon started coxing me from the 2 seat and told me to get the legs down. We made up time and were level half way. In an exhilarating finish we beat the “A” crew by 1/2 a length. I’ve never managed to get so much power out of my legs in a race and it felt good keeping it going to the end.

I don’t think it was expected that we would win and to be honest I wasn’t sure myself as the other crew were strong and experienced. It was a damn good race so either way I would have enjoyed it. The pot helped though ;-)

As for the rest of the regatta:

  • Sandy hit the reeds in the s3 sculls final
  • Steve won the novice sculls
  • Stratford won the Victor Ludorum (again)

About this blog

Welcome to the personal blog of Robert A J Ford, a professional interaction designer and developer based in the UK.

I started this blog in 2007 to record my cycle training leading up to the Etape. I've never been one for diaries but this format works well with my job and lifestyle so I expanded it to record details of other training and events.

As the blog grew it became a space where friends and family followed my activities. Their feedback has inspired me to keep writing. I hope you find something of interest and please feel free to leave comments.
